The military reinstalls the temporary pier off Gaza shores after the third closure.
The Pentagon announced Friday that its temporary humanitarian aid pier has been reinstalled on the shores of Gaza, transferring an additional 1.4 million pounds of aid to the 2.1 million citizens living within the narrow region.
This is the third time the Defense Department’s temporary pier has been uninstalled and reinstalled since it was first put in place on May 16. The first two times, rough seas due to inclement weather nearly broke the pier, so the Israeli Defense Forces disassembled it and brought it to a nearby facility for repairs. This time, the disassembly was done preeminently to prevent further damage from rough seas.
Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder said, “As has been the case in the past, Israeli Defense Force engineers provided all the necessary support to ensure the safe emplacement of the pier on the beach, and there were no U.S. boots on the ground during the re-establishment of the pier.”
